October 2005
President's Corner

George Y. Karmo, P.E.

As we enter the fourth quarter of 2005, we continue to deliver projects to our clients and also capture new opportunities.

Our most recent captures included two prime consultant contracts for as-needed services: One for construction oversight at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport and the second for engineering services for the North East Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD). These two contracts are awaiting immediate assignments.

We have also been selected as part of the Jacobs-Civil team for the design and construction management services for DWSD’s Upper Rouge Tunnel. The work on this major project is scheduled to start in November 2005 and would last for approximately nine years – a year and a half of design and seven years of construction. Per a sublease agreement between Jacobs and TYJT, the project’s core staff will be stationed on the second floor of TYJT’s office for the design duration.

As new projects start, others will be completed. Few of our major projects that are scheduled for completion during the next three to six months include PC-713, Departmentwide Instrumentation and Control, PC-744, Program Management at the Detroit Wastewater Treatment Plant, and DWSD’s Design/Build Security Project.

New office in Baltimore, Maryland: TYJT has been marketing our services in the Baltimore, MD area for over a year. We believe that we have reasonable chances for success in the Maryland/DC area working with Jackson & Tull, our partner and building on the companywide core business project and staff experiences in the areas of water, wastewater and infrastructure. We have procured an office located at 3700 Koppers St. #130, Baltimore, MD 21227 since August 1, 2005. The office marketing and business development activities are headed by Gregory Parker, TYJT’s Vice President with major assistance provided by Henry Smart, TYJT’s Associate.

Retirements: We are preparing to celebrate the careers of two individuals who served TYJT for a long time. These are Paul Tucker, Jr., TYJT’s CEO and Chairman of the Board and Larry Sanko, a senior Designer. On behalf of our staff, we offer Paul and Larry our sincere gratitude for their contribution to TYJT and wish them a healthy and happy retirement. We recognize Paul’s vision and hard efforts in establishing a consulting engineering business that we are all proud of. In recognition of Paul’s contribution to the engineering community in Detroit, TYJT will join our clients and Paul’s friends and associates in saying “thank you” to Paul and in wishing him a healthy and happy retirement life. This will be done in our Open House party scheduled for December 8, 2005.

Doing Work in the Suburbs

For the most part when TYJT talks about our water work we usually think in terms of DWSD. However, over the past couple of years, we have been making some inroads into the neighboring communities. As of this writing, we are currently working in four communities in the metropolitan area and we are hopeful to expand our customer base by a couple of more by next year.

Our biggest effort is in Redford Township where we completed a leak survey and water audit last year. Our findings so far have identified over a million dollars in previously unaccounted-for water associated with leaks and inaccurate meters.

TYJT also completed a similar project in West Bloomfield Township. In this community the water loss equated to over two million dollars in lost revenue. Due to the high pressure in the township, one of the leaks discovered equated to nearly $800,000.

David Guastella, P.E., Vice President

In Bloomfield Township we recently completed the first phase of a water main replacement project using HDPE pipe. The work is in the Hickory Heights community and we will be initiating the second phase of this work in the beginning of November.

Not all of the work has been water related though. In Southfield we are a subconsultant to HRC for a municipal services contract. We recently completed our first task, which was a bridge on Nine Mile Road over the Rouge River. The design was completed in September and we are currently awaiting MDOT approval.

The next task in Southfield will be to replace water mains in the northeast part of the city where they are experiencing low pressure. This work should be starting early next year.

Next year offers some exciting possibilities as well. We have already been selected as a subconsultant to HRC to complete a leak survey in Warren. This is scheduled to begin in spring 2006.

We are also pursuing a hydraulic model for Redford Township. The model will be very beneficial to the community as they determine alternative ways of supplying the township.

It is a different market in the suburbs compared to Detroit, since most communities work with the same engineering firm for many years, sometimes generations. We have been fortunate in that we have been able to leverage our professional relationships with other consultants (Wade Trim in Redford and HRC in Bloomfield, West Bloomfield, and Southfield) with our unique services related to leak surveys and water audits to get the work.

TYJT could not be successful without the hard work of those involved. The work of Mike Klapec, Tim Korson and Kimberly Bright has been instrumental in the success we have had with the leak surveys and water audits. With regards to the Nine Mile Bridge, Bob Karber worked closely with Mike Clyne to complete the design on time, even though the original schedule was reduced by nearly two months.

We are hopeful to continue this trend of strategically partnering with other consultants as we look to expand our presence in southeastern Michigan. Our success will continue to be dependent on our dedicated and knowledgeable staff.
